I often receive questions regarding my background so let me share a bit about my personal experience in Health Information. My life has drastically changed through my career in Health Information Management that catapulted me into various opportunities within the Healthcare industry.
I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting and working with so many amazing leaders in the industry that I simply can’t wait to introduce more people to our amazing career field. The opportunities are endless if you are willing to work hard and become a “lifelong learner”.
The passion to help others through health information started in college. I originally wanted to be a Medical Transcriptionist until I discovered Inpatient Coding. ICD-9 was the classification system back then used for Medical Coding. A Medical Coder is required to accurately apply codes that translate medical conditions described in the patient record by the physician to a code. Coders had to be savvy in deciphering physician handwriting and researching the entire paper medical record for accuracy and completeness, not an easy task.
I discovered several other interesting careers while in college but Medical Coding was both challenging and fulfilling. I had finally found my niche’ and passion! I loved the research involved and putting the puzzle pieces together for each patient’s medical record. I’ve been extremely fortunate to learn from several amazing instructors within the Health Information Management program at Ferris State University (Go Bulldogs!!). I will never forget that 5 hour ICD-9 Coding class! Yes, you read correctly, it was 5 hours long. Favorite coding motto, “if you want to become a better coder, you have to code” and oh did we code!! I could honestly talk about coding for hours!
When I experienced first hand, how challenging the healthcare system could be by attempting to obtain medical records for a loved one that passed very suddenly, I couldn’t believe it. This was not an easy process by any means, mostly because I lacked the knowledge I needed to navigate the healthcare system. It’s only become more complicated now with electronic records, cybersecurity issues and a true need for health literacy. I’m sure many individuals are experiencing similar issues. I was determined to help my family and others avoid those same challenges in the future through my education.
Our mission at HIM Relevant is to empower others with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the complexity of our healthcare system by providing educational resources, training and content. We believe education and training is a key component to empower individuals to be actively involved in their own healthcare. Our resources are also helping those pursuing a career in health information and increasing the involvement of loved ones in their own personal health information through Patient Advocacy.
I’d love to discuss ALL THE CODING nuances with you further , and hope to do so during our workshops and/or online courses where we cover many different coding concepts. Check out our newsletter for our events, course listings and webinars. We’ve put together some really amazing content to help students in pursuit of a career in Health Information. The things that I wished I knew at the beginning of my career I am providing in various educational resources.
